Frequently asked questions
What should I expect from my first free class?
Our Instructors will greet you and ask you to fill out paperwork for insurance purposes. The other students will introduce themselves and then class will start. The Instructor running the class will get you and the other students to warm up by demonstrating the techniques and go from there. Try not to be hard on yourself if you don't get the technique(s) right, it's your first class. Go with the flow and most importantly have fun! At the end of class, the Instructor will ask you how you went, and if you want to continue your training. If yes, you'll be asked your bank details for direct debit and what package you want to choose.
Can I bring a friend to my first class?
Yes of course, you can bring any friend or family member with you for moral support. Even better, if they want to jump in and try their first class with you for free, then great! They'll just need to fill out some paperwork for insurance purposes.
What should I bring or wear to class?
In the adult classes, wear comfortable fitting shorts or pants (no zippers) or active wear, running shoes, shirt or muscle top. Finger - toe nails need to be trimmed and jewellry (earings, necklaces, rings) will need to be taken off. Long nails and jewellry could accidentally cause a cut or injury to other students and yourself. Bring a towel and bottle of water. We sell bottled water or sport drinks at the studio.
In the Junior Defense Academy (JDA) classes, all our students wear the JDA t-shirt (costs $15 per shirt) and plain black shorts/pants/leggings.
Do I need to wear a uniform or buy equipment for class?
All students in our Junior Defense Academy (JDA) will need to wear the JDA t-shirt (costs $15 per shirt) and eventually work towards buying their own kids boxing gloves or MMA gloves. In the meantime, students can use the studios equipment.
In the adult classes, the only uniform is the Deftac Krav Maga t-shirt ($20 each, sleeveness is also available for same price). Initially, students can use the studios equipment (except the mouth guard), but we do encourage students to work towards buying their own boxing gloves, groin guard, mouth guard and head gear. **Optional: forearm guards and shin guards.
**This can all be bought at the studio.
How fit do I need to be?
You don't need to be fit prior to commencing your training with us, we train all fitness levels. Many of our students start their training wanting to learn how to defend themselves and also find their fitness improves. Whether you're already working out or wanting to get fit, as we say at the studio, coming to class will make you Krav Fit! The hardest part, is taking that first step and coming to class.
What are the age groups of the people training in the adult classes?
The youngest we allow for students to train in our adult classes is age 16 and above (except in our BJJ & striking class, which is age 11). Each class will vary in terms of the age groups, which is realistic to what you may encounter in a self-defense situation as you won't always know the age of the attacker(s).
Do I need prior experience in martial arts?
No, you don't need prior martial arts experience, in fact a large number of our students have never thrown a punch, kick, taken someone down until they started training in our classes. We train all levels of martial arts experience from no experience to advance. The hardest part, is taking that first step and coming to class.
I have been training in martial arts for a long time, how is Deftac Krav Maga different?
Many of our students have prior martial arts experience and what separates Deftac Krav Maga is the realistic scenarios we drill in class (multiple attackers, weapons, use of environment etc), the simpliciticy of the movements - techniques and rather than learn multiple techniques for different scenarios, you learn concepts that will help you problem solve under duress. As you will hear a number of the Instructors say in class, it's not what you know, it's how you use it. If you have prior experience in Martial Arts, Deftac Krav Maga is a great skill to learn and add to your Defensive Tactics toolbox for the modern world.
How intense are the classes?
The Instructor running the class have a good understanding of each of the students skills, experience training with us and will adjust the intensity accordingly. The purpose of these drills is to retrain your brain when it is reacting to it's fight or flight response during these stressful periods to not panic, assess your surroundings (for example looking for the exit, watching for other attackers, finding an improvised weapon, etc) and as a last resort if you're unable to run away, to stay in the fight and literally fight through it! Our goal at Deftac Studios is to empower you to have that confidence and decide what to do next!
How long will it take before I become good in learning self-defence?
In a short period of time, we can teach anyone how to strike, throw someone, knife defense, etc. But, if you can't defend yourself under stress, then what you have learnt won't help you and building this response takes time. From our observation, if you're training three times a week (adult classes), we've seen a change in about 3 - 6 months. In saying that it's not a race! This is about you and your journey. The changes us Instructors commonly see is how the students respond to the pressure drills or scenarios in class. We notice you're not breathing as hard or getting tired as quickly, you're problem solving under stress, your intensity has increased, and you're staying in the fight. The best change we see is the increasing confidence of our students in themselves!
